Improve Your Writing By Reading Like a Fiend
This is a great article that I highly recommend reading. As a teacher, I often get asked by parents about how their child can improve their writing - or things associated with writing such as grammar, spelling and vocabulary. "Have them read more" is often the answer I will give them.
Reading and Writing are cut from the same cloth in my opinion. Yet, in the same way those who walk are not necessarily the best runners, those who read may not always be the best writers. But I do believe it is a step towards becoming a better writer.
I was teaching fourth grade last year and am now in fifth grade with some of the same students. I have seen some of my kids absolutely come into their own as writers over the last six months. I would hesitate to say that reading is the sole factor in their improvement - life experiences, effort, development all play a factor too - but I do know that some of my best writers are also my most voracious readers.
There were some great points in this article that I think are really valid and if you want to become a better writer (or want this for your child) you would do well to read it, take notes and put it into practice.
